What you should know about Carbon Monoxide in your home!

3/25/2015

Picture
Many people each year are hospitalized or die from carbon monoxide poisoning, most of them while sleeping!  It's important to get educated about this colourless, odorless, tasteless toxic gas!

Carbon monoxide is being produced in the majority of our homes.  It comes from carbon based fuels such as wood, propane, natural gas, heating oil, coal, kerosene, charcoal and gasoline.

These toxic fumes can enter the body through normal breathing, leading to the lungs while replacing oxygen in the blood and preventing the flow of oxygen to vital organs.  Symptoms can be from headaches and nausea to death.

There are precautions that homeowners should take to protect themselves and their families!
  • Have appliances properly vented, maintained and inspected regularly by a licenced professional
  • Have your chimney cleaned and inspected annually
  • Install CSA approved Carbon Monoxide Dectectors throughout your home

Proper Placement of the Carbon Monoxide Detector

For maximum protection - Carbon Monoxide Dectectors should be locatedin or near primary sleeping areas and on each level of your home.  Any height is appropriate since carbon monoxide is the same weight as air.

DO NOT install the Detectors - in very cold temperatures, near cleaning products, near open flame appliances including, stoves, fireplaces or furnaces, near vents or exhaust or behind furniture or other obstructions.

Due Diligence will keep your family safe and healthy!!

Have you checked your furnace filter lately?

10/16/2014

Picture
When was the last time you checked your filter?
It should be done on a regular basis

 MONTHLY IS A GREAT ROUTINE!
Filters are there for a reason - to trap dirt particles from entering the blower motor and components inside your furnace and keep a consistant clean air flow.

A dirty filter will not only cause your furnace to work harder and less efficiently, but can potentially cause equipment failure.

The need to change the filter will depend on various components of your home and the size of the filter.  Dirt, smoke, pets and the number of people living in your house could all contribute to the frequency that the filter may need to be changed.  Some filters are disposable, while others are washable or can be vacuumed.
If you want top performance from your heating equipment - check the furnace filter regularly and change it as needed!
NOTE:  HVAC Equipment should be maintained regualarly by a qualified contractor.  During these visits, components that a homeowner is unable to check, will be cleaned, checked and tested.

Hopefully we can soon  open up those windows and let the fresh air in!
Until then, humidity in your home could be a problem!  Scratchy throats, dry skin and splitting wood are a few signs that the humidity in your home is on the low side.
Low humidity levels and dry air is at it's worst right now, causing poor indoor air quality.    Air-Tech  can help you take control of the humidity as well as the pathogens in the air that you breathe to keep everyone and everything in your home healthy and comfortable!

Peace of Mind when hiring an HVAC Contractor

3/12/2014

 Do your research

-  What is the history of the company
-  How many years have they been in business
-  What products do they sell
-  Warranty coverages
-  Hours of operation
-  Licences held
-  Are they knowledgable_
-  Can they offer government rebates
-  Will they supply customer testimonials/references

Where's the best place to find legitimate contractors?

The links below are a good place to start when it comes to finding a qualified HVAC contractor.  In the HVAC industry, contractors need to meet certain criteria to be an HRAI member, therefore it's a great place to find contractors who are licensed, qualified and able to offer government rebates.
Word of mouth is also a great way to find the real facts on a contractor, so be sure to ask around!
